With support from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-funded Food For Education (FFE) project, World Education, Inc. and local NGO Bandos Komar are working in partnership to implement the new Grade 2 Khmer literacy package in Kampong Chhnang province during the 2021-2022 school year. Today, Cambodia celebrates its 7th annual National Reading Day. Each year on March 11, the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) hosts a nationwide event to promote the joy and value of reading, cultivate a culture of reading and lifelong learning, and celebrate the country’s success in improving reading outcomes. Improving literacy and reading outcomes has been a national priority for MoEYS since 2010 when a study conducted by the World Bank revealed disappointing reading achievement scores. Under the Food For Education (FFE) project, World Education is leveraging mobile tools and technology-enabled solutions to enhance teaching and learning outcomes in Khmer literacy. The project is using popular social media platforms, such as Facebook and Telegram, teachers can extend their development beyond the FFE trainings and apply new techniques in the classroom. The FFE team has made nine educational videos showing real Cambodian teachers modeling new techniques in the classroom. The World Bank recently published a blog post that explored “Three Steps to Get Every Child Reading.” The piece examines “learning poverty” and the global learning crisis which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, 53% of children in low- and middle-income countries were unable to read and understand a simple text by the age of 10. The blog post states that today, levels of learning poverty are increasing, and that at-home learning environments are a major factor in the uneven impact of the pandemic on education. World Education will soon begin implementing a new Home-Based Reading project in 504 households in Kampong Thom and Battambang provinces. Funded by the World Bank, this one-year project seeks to increase the amount, quality, and effectiveness of students’ at-home reading behaviors. The project will target both current Grade 2 students and their caregivers. During the project’s 7-month implementation phase, WEI will provide participating Grade 2 students with books to keep and read at home, and participating caregivers with instructions on how best to encourage their child to read at home. In August, World Education Cambodia opened a field office in Kampot province to support its work on the All Children Learning project. Through a three-year subcontract to RTI International, World Education is supporting the implementation of the new Early Grade Learning package for all preschool, grade 1, and grade 2 teachers in Kampot province. In addition to coordinating the training for 100% of all upper-preschool teachers, grade 1 teachers, grade 2 teachers, and school directors in all districts of Kampot province, World Education will oversee and manage 48 Literacy Coaches. The piloting of Track and Trace has been such a great success in Cambodia that earlier this year, the Cambodian Minister of Education declared that the government will take over the management and funding of the Track and Trace platform and will begin using it nationwide in 2020! World Education and JSI will continue to support the government in this national scale up.
